Theyyam: The Dance of Gods

Theyyam is a ritual performance in North Malabar, Kerala, practiced by specific communities called Samudhayas. The term Theyyam means Daivam (God), and Theyyattam translates to “the dance of God.” It is performed during Tulam Pattu, the tenth day of the Malayalam month Tulam. This sacred performance involves elaborate preparations and ceremonial stages.

There are three primary categories of Theyyam:

Shaktheya (Shakti worship)
Shiva (Shiva worship)
Vaishnava (Vishnu worship)

The performer, revered as Daivam, transforms from an ordinary human to a divine entity through ritualistic makeup and costumes. The performance takes place in openair temple groves or sacred spaces.

The Aesthetics and Symbolism of Theyyam

Theyyam relies on Aharyabhinaya (expressing divinity through costume, makeup, and headgear). The artist’s appearance, including vibrant facial makeup, elaborate headgear, and sacred ornaments, evokes emotions like devotion, fear, and awe. Each color and pattern represents the deity’s attributes.

Vayanattu Kulavan is a powerful Theyyam form, believed to have emerged from Lord Shiva’s thigh. It is performed in sacred groves (Kavu), demanding rigorous spiritual discipline. Before the performance, a scholar narrates the mythology behind this Theyyam.
